Quand la communauté des sports d’hiver élève sa voix

Quand le président de la Fédération Internationale de Ski (FIS), Gian Franco Kasper, s’est exprimé très clairement et publiquement, niant la réalité des changements climatiques, c’était à la fois choquant et dangereux. POW a lancé une lettre ouverte demandant sa démission et vous avez répondu nombreux en la signant. 

À peine une semaine après le lancement de la campagne, presque 9000 lettres avaient été envoyées, demandant la démission immédiate de Kasper. Un grand merci à vous toutes et tous!

Cet effort a eu une portée énorme, avec, selon nos estimations, plus de 200 millions d’impressions dans les médias à travers le monde, y compris dans le Daily Mail en Grande Bretagne, ESPN aux US et dans SkiChrono et ailleurs en France.

L’effet a été amplifié par des marques et stations et surtout par des athlètes qui se sont exprimés en public pour contredire les propos choquants de M. Kasper. Parmi eux notamment, Michelle Gisin de la POW Riders Alliance Suisse, Daniel Yule, qui a donné la moitié de ses primes des deux derniers slaloms de la Coupe du monde à POW Suisse et Jamie Anderson, athlète étasunienne de l’Alliance qui a donné ses primes du Championnat du Monde de ski à POW. Bravo à eux et à tous les athlètes qui ont pris une position publique !

so there is something i really need to talk about… our FIS president Gianfranco Kasper denied that global warming exists in an interview. Well i don‘t know about you but i think the winter sport community should be the first to notice. I went through some „old“ photos to show you how bad the glaciers in Saas Fee look compared to when i first went up there. I didn‘t have to go this far. Photo 1,3 and 5 were taken in October 2018. Photo Number 2 and 4 are from October 2013. Only five years had an insane impact. It‘s a fact that the swiss glaciers lost 50% of their surface in the last 160 years. Six of the eight worst years of glaciers melting happened after 2008. The winterseason is 37 days shorter compared to 1970. These are just some facts. To slow this down we all must try and make a change as big or small it is. And if persons in such a powerful position with so much influence deny what is happening we will not live a future where our children will be able to go skiing and fall in love with winter and the wonderful nature we have. So i would like the @fisalpine to reconsider our goals to make our amazing sport have a future. When people ask me why I care about nature, it honestly blows my mind… Every single one of our homes are made from precious natural resources and we are unable to live without clean water, trees and all of the natural elements were so blessed to have. If we don’t act on climate change we will not always have these things! To have the “leader” & President of FIS (@fissnowboard ), who represents skiing and snowboarding globally, not acknowledge something that affects our sport each and every day is very disheartening. Instead, he should practice being a leader for a positive future, not share his unconstitutional ignorant opinions. He has the opportunity to bring future generations together to enjoy these amazing snow sports. For him to be so reckless with his words, ignorant and such a negative influence breaks my heart. I thought of dropping out of The World Champs, but realized I’d rather share my thoughts with the media and fans and use my platform to share a more positive message and I’ve decided to donate my World Championship prize money to @protectourwinters and I challenge my fellow competitors to do the same. As a snowboarder, and a global citizen, I represent POW and our environment because it is all of our homes, no matter where you come from… Please help shine light on creating a more positive future and being more conscious and more caring of everything! Kasper s’est dit « un petit peu surpris » par la tempête de commentaires qu’il a lui même provoquée.

Kasper: « Je n’ai rien contre Daniel Yule »

Il reste à son poste pour l’instant, mais le monde a bien entendu la voix de la communauté des sports d’hiver et la position courageuse prise par les athlètes. Entretemps, Daniel Yule s’est proposé et a été élu représentant des athlètes auprès de la FIS « pour essayer de faire bouger les choses. »

Restons motivés et aux aguets pour continuer de faire bouger les choses nous aussi !
